The Regional Safety Award is earned by the region with the overall best-accumulated safety record for all yards in the region. In 2023, the Arkansas Region saw a significant reduction in safety injuries and costs. The facilities (and their manager) within the Arkansas Region are: North Little Rock (Adam Rauth), Rogers (Damon Hassell), Fayetteville (Emerson Zelda), Harrison (Kelly Walton), Hot Springs (Krysta Swift), Jonesboro (Justin Walker), and Reeds Spring (Al Madsen). The Regional EHS Coordinator is Heather Wigley. Congratulations to Leman Schulz, Senior Director of Operations, and his team for earning this award!

Over the weekend, our Southern WI Region sponsored the Metal Mania event at Madison Area Technical College, Fort Atkinson Campus.   Metal Mania is a Metal Fabrication and Welding Art Competition. Alter sponsored the metal used for the competition and smoked meat for the event. Special thank you to the smoke team: Joe Roesel, Keith Christians, Alex Bilse, and Kaleb Wynn. We smoked 8 briskets and 8 pork butts for the Metal Mania Event. We estimated that we served 200-250 people at the event.   We look forward to this event again next year!

At Alter Trading, we strive to spread the recycling message to people of all ages and backgrounds. One of the best ways to get little ones to learn about our industry comes from our friends over at Scrap University Kids. Authored by Shaziya M. Jaffer, Brad W. Rudover, and Jessica Alexanderson and illustrated by Adam Trask, this book helps children learn about recycling, math, community, financial literacy, perseverance, sharing, teamwork, and donating.   Pictured is Lewis & Clark Elementary School teacher Lori Schoeneweis reading The Girl Who Recycled 1 Million Cans to her first-grade class in Godfrey, Illinois. Lori said the kids liked the book and started asking a lot of questions. It sounds like they are ready to learn even more!   Help us teach the importance of recycling and inspire the next generation of metal recyclers by visiting the Scrap University Kids website. There you can order books, download free resources, and learn about opportunities to get involved in your community.

Congratulations to our Monroe Team! This year, the President’s Safety Award – Small Yard was earned by our Monroe facility. The Monroe team earned this award by having a great attitude towards safety, welcoming the EHS Coordinator training and walkarounds, and being 4 years injury-free. Pictured from left to right are facility employees Chad Stricker, Facility Manager Sheila Fry, Doug Fry, Gary Pulver, and Joshua Reynolds. The President’s Safety Award is earned by the operations that show consistent dedication and improvements to safety at all levels within the operation. There are two categories: Large Processing Yard and Small Feeder Yard. The small feeder yard category includes all yards with limited processing equipment such as balers/shears and operate under 50 thousand production hours annually.
